Trixie Does Jerusalem

Just posting this to let you all know, that I've finally buckled down, grown up, and gotten a job. Due to my first rate networking and social skills, and the fact that several Queen's professors are susceptible to bribery, I've landed an open ended contractual position as an outside consultant with the Israeli Antiquities Authority specializing in the authentication of antiques and relics.

It sounds a lot fancier than it is. Basically I'll go into an office, or occasionally a dig site, look at some broken pottery and say “fake, fake, real, fake, real, real” etc..etc...

What this means to the guild at large. I'll be moving at some point this summer to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, but probably Jerusalem. This will most likely keep me offline for the better part of a week. I'll still be able to log in and fool around with you maniacs, but for at least one week, I'll be off the grid.

Not sure when the move is happening yet, but when I do know, I'll let you all know.

La Trix

I know!  This is completely the opposite direction I wanted to go, but it's one of those once in a lifetime opportunities.  I was actually considering going with another offer, but fortunatly, Atri talked some sense into me. :)

"Charlottesville, Virginia,

"Charlottesville, Virginia, 1780

Issac Jefferson watched as his mother prepared their evening meal in the tiny slave cabin which was home. As pastry chef in the big house at Monticello, she was familiar with European ways of cooking, but here at home she was doing something quite different. Two pots simmered by the fire. Handmade and unglazed, they were grey-brown in color. The larger held a thick porridge of dried corn, the smaller a rich mixture of herbs, tomatoes, and bits of rabbit and squirrel. Their contents would be served together in shallow bowls." James Deetz, In Small Things Forgotten: An Archaeology of Early American Life

Red,

Congratulations on your new job with the IAA! Pat yourself on the back, this opportunity is going to open up so many doors for you. Throw yourself in there head-first and knock their socks off. As a history major myself, I envy you :P Good work, keep it up, and have a blast living this "once in a lifetime opportunity"

Now for some Gorty *finger wagging*

The next time you say your work isn't fancy, you're going to be in big trouble, and I might revoke your bullwhip and fedora. You know your work is much more meaningful than that. All those pot sherds you'll be looking at are little whispers from the people who came before us--well, except for the fake ones of course. You are going to be helping other scholars peice it all together and give them a voice again. Those old artifacts represent the societies who made them, but collecting, preserving and studying them gives comtemporary people a sense of their heritage--and to that end helps them shape their cultural identity.

*growls at Cearah--but not too much*

God bless,

Gort

  Aw, thanks Gorty. I know

Aw, thanks Gorty.

I know there's an important aspect of this job.  The black market antiquities trade is the third largest international criminal industry in the world, behind drugs and guns.  Israel is a frontline hot spot for this activity.  Much like Southern and Central Africa for guns, and the Mexican/American border for drugs.

The tomb raiders are pretty much wining across the board.  They have more people, better funding, more motivation, and they don't require a team of lawyers every time they want to brush some sand aside.  I saw one study which suggested, that with current international requirements and regulations, a good team of tomb raiders can clean out a site in less time then it takes a traditional archaeological team to even get permission to dig.  So right now, it's a loosing battle.  However it's one that I'm passionate about, and I'm really happy knowing that I'm doing something, however small, to help fight it :)

Update

Update:  I'll be moving July 15th.  From that point, I could be offline anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.  So just figure something out for Cearah to do.  I'll miss you guys, and try to keep you updated on the forums.

Well I'd like to thank Funcom

Well I'd like to thank Funcom for a LOVELY last night of gaming.  Chat was completely broke and wasn't able to communicate at all.

Well...I've got doctor prescribed narcotics that should keep me stoned enough to get me through the flight, and I'm turning in the keys of my flat today.

This is it folks.  When next you hear from me, I'll be an Israelite.  I should be able to post on the forums form time to time.  They have dozens of interweb cafes around there, so I should still have some communication with you lot, but Cearah is out for a bit ICly.

She's taking a heard of pigs back to her old clan as a peace offering.  That's the story ICly.  Try to not burn the place down while she's gone, and remember to CLOSE THE DAMNED GATE!!!!

In parting...  as a great poet once wrote...

All my bags are packed, I'm ready to go
I'm standing here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin', it's early morn
The taxi's waiting, he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could cry.

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go.
Cause, I'm leavin' on a jet plane
don't know when I'll be back again
Oh, babe, I hate to go.

Ello Gang! Well it's

Ello Gang!

Well it's official.  I'm an Israelite.  This isn't the first time I've been to Israel, but being here with the realization that you're here to stay has an entirely different feel to it.  It's rather hot here, but not as hot as I'd feared.  The sea tends to keep things cooler than they'd normally be, and there's been a constant cool breeze rolling through that makes things even more bearable.

The flight was almost bearable as I was drugged up for the vast majority of it, but the drugs wore off about twenty minutes prior to landing, so I spend the last leg of the flight paralyzed by absolute terror and hyperventilating.  Once on the ground, though, I calmed down quickly and was able to finally make the realization that I wasn't in Northern Ireland anymore.

Once I got to my apartment, I had the joy of discovering that my land lady had moved all my belongings to the wrong room, which was a bit of a shock, but fortunately her sons live with her, and they immediately started moving everything back, and she was absolutely remorse with guilt and apologized profusely.  I of course kept waving this off as a small matter sense it was being tending to immediately, but she seemed very embarrassed.  I tried to help her sons move with moving me things, but they kept shooing me away.  "Our mistake, our job to fix it."  They did, however, allow me to make them some tea.

I spent my weekend wandering the streets and seeing the sites, as any proper new resident should do.  Not the ancient stuff, I've seen most of that, and can see it again whenever I choose.  I mean the real sites.  Good places to eat, the post office, police station, fire station, internet cafes, salon,  launders, grocery shops.  That kinda thing.  There's a lovely small balcony attached to my apartment that gives me a lovely view of the city in one direction, and a lovely view of an elderly couple's dining room in the other direction.

Today was my first day on the job.  Sorta... I just showed up, filled out paperwork and applied for the various permits I needed and was introduced to some of the other consultants and got to sit in on a meeting.  Everyone seems excessively nice.  Some of the folks here seem oddly eclectic, so I should fit in just fine here.

Thus far, I'm very happy that I chose to go down this road.  It's beautiful here and this really does appear to be the adventure of a lifetime.

I already miss the hell outta you guys.  There's a lot to do, but as I don't intend to push my luck and wander about alone at night until I feel more comfortable here, once the sun goes down, there's little to do but sit around my apartment and read field manuals and policy memos.  I haven't decapitated anyone in FOUR DAYS!!!!  Unacceptable

Well I hope you lot are doing well, and I hope the gates are closed.  What are the odds that we'll be at renown level five by the time I return?  I really want Cearah to have her pig :p

Awesome. I happened to notice we were ranked this week too for both valor and artisan. Most of the guilds have 3-5x our membership too. The footnote said the 50 highest contributors is what get's counted.

Two updates. Firstly, I

Two updates.

Firstly, I started officially doing my job today.  I'm working on reviewing findings on three ongoing cases right now.  I haven't left the lab yet, but surprisingly, I find this rather exciting and enjoyable.  A ton of red tape, and an absurd amount of paperwork, but it's government work, so whaddya expect, eh?

Far more important though, is my second bit of news.

A technician is coming to set up my interwebs next Tuesday.  I'll be seeing you guys soon :)

Sense I'm only a consultant,

Sense I'm only a consultant, the government won't issue me one, and, the laws here state that you can apply for a gun permit only if you have been a citizen for three years.  Due to my government work, however, and the fact that I actually assist in law enforcement, I can qualify, should I choose to do the lengthy process, for a restricted license that allows me to have a firearm in my home, and carry it on official business when out in the field.

I just haven't decided if I want to do that or not.  It's not that I'm intimidated by firearms. It's just that, in my experience, carrying a firearm has a tendency to attract trouble.

By the way, I am now plugged into the all knowing series of tubes that is the interwebs.  I have plans tonight, however I will be there for Tesso tomorrow night.

Miss you all terribly and can't wait to be back.

Cheers!
